Assembled it today.
Runnin’ MS-DOS on it currently.
It’s a Gigabyte GA-486VM AT board with a 66MHz 486 DX2 66 processor.
16mb RAM! Unfortunately the BIOS has a 504MB limit but I am working on circumventing it. Those long cards are two VLB (VESA Local Bus) cards. One is a video card and another is a multi I/O card that acts as the IDE controller and has the serial + parallel ports.
Closeup of that processor.
Serial mouse is a Kensington Expert trackball. It’s pretty sweet. The graphics card is a Genoa 8500VL 1MB which is a rebranded Cirrus Logic CL-GD5426
Everything works great. It has a Creative Sound Blaster 16 and a 3COM Etherlink III ISA network card. Also came with a 14.4K ISA modem :)
dat connectivity
and TURBO mode working!

the feels and the memories! (not talking about the ram!)

Ah, 486. Now that takes me back to college...

Faster than my first IBM-compatible... (386DX 25, 4MB RAM, back in 1991)
I was just holding my dash cam’s Micro SD card in my hand this morning and reflecting how it has three orders of magnitude more storage than that Gateway.

Nice build! Though, there’s a problem with your display...
BTW, did you still need that floppy drive?

Let’s try that picture again...

Thanks! I got one from a friend. The display works fine, just maybe a few artifacts due to old GPU

I have one in the basement but it would take up precious desk space.

That RAM was $50 per megabyte when it was new.

Oh the memories. I remember my first machine, 386/40 with 4MB and a 120MB (I think) HD. I got a few years out of it.

Ahhhh, my first PC was a Packard Bell with a 486DX2. Windows 3.1 for Workgroups. It came with 4MB of RAM (we later added 8MB to total of 12MB). It was pricey - maybe around $3k?

Amazing how much hardware was at the time. A $1,500 machine was relatively low end 20-25 years ago. Now a $1,500 machine is high end.

My first computer was an Apple //c - 1 MHz 65C02, 128 kiB RAM, and a 140 kiB single-sided 5.25" floppy drive.
First PC was an IBM PS/1 2121-G42 - 20 MHz 386SX, 2 MiB RAM, 40 MB HDD, and a 3.5" floppy. I’ve actually got another one of that exact config now:

holy crap yours still works! Good stuff.
any internal pics?

Grand total of ZERO ISA slots unless you get the (optional) expansion enclosure. And that’s a proprietary 2400 bps internal modem in my hand on the left.
Oh, and the power supply is in the CRT.
Its hostname is calais.bhtooefr.org (well, it’s not TCP/IP networked, but there are reasons for it to have a hostname, as I might run a BBS on it) - so called because of the “four-quad” screen. Four-quad, Quad 4, Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais, and that’s how one gets a hostname.
Although, then there’s my IBM 5155 (Portable PC) build, I’ll just link to the VOGONS thread: http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?…
I’ve upgraded it to an ST-277R since posting that though.
